Series: Great Escapes
Author: Steven Otfinoski
Genre: Historical Fiction
“Great Escapes” is a 6 book series with each book written by a different author. This series is perfect for fans of the “I Survived” series!
“Survival in the Wilderness” takes place in December, 1920. It is based on a true account of 3 US Navy officials who board a hot air balloon for an easy, routine training flight. The story is supplemented by fact boxes which give further historical context and information. For example: did you know that in 1920 the Navy was consistently using messenger pigeons for communication? Several of these pigeons came along on the balloon ride so the men on the balloon could send messages back to headquarters.
After an uneventful day of ballooning, the Navy officials encounter heavy rain and wind which knock them off course and eventually force a crash landing deep within the snowy Canadian wilderness. As Lieutenants Louis Kloor, Stephen Farrel, and Walter Hinton search for a way to be rescued, they were overcome by freezing temperatures, starvation, and overwhelming fatigue. They struggle with moral as well as physical trials in their desperate bid for survival. The brave men faced their greatest enemies yet – desperation and despair. How will they survive?
